It may be cold, drizzly and dark now that Winter is drawing in, but there’s no need to batten down the hatches and put a pause on date night. If anything, getting out there with your loved one and treating one another to a romantic winter break could be just the thing you two need to warm up this frostier season. Brighten up those gloomy winter days and get planning the ultimate winter break in Liverpool this year.
We’ve put together a selection of the finest that Liverpool has to offer, so you don’t have to.
There’s nothing better than hunkering down with your significant other and putting the world to rights over a drink – or four! There are so many places you can go to quench your thirst on a winter break in Liverpool, but we’ve chosen a couple which we know you’ll love.
Buyers’ Club, 24 Hardman St, Liverpool L1 9AX
It’s not often that you find a venue which transitions so easily between a wine bar, cocktail lounge, restaurant and gig space, but Buyers club manages to do this effortlessly. Concealed behind a narrow driveway at the top of Hardman St, this bar is ideal for cosy, laid back drinks. It’s definitely trendy, but steers away from being pretentious. With their extensive wine menu, wide selection of beers, ales, ciders and a fantastic repertoire of cocktails – this is an excellent option when you want to keep it casual and talk into the early hours.
The Merchant, 40 Slater St, Liverpool L1 4BX
We reckon this is one of the coolest places to grab a drink in Liverpool. Even if it’s chilly outside you can still grab yourself a booth outside, whack the outdoor heaters on and cuddle up over a G&T. You can also try a fantastic assortment of craft beers if that’s more your thing. In The Merchant you’re sure to find a wonderful atmosphere, eclectic music – and for those late-night munchies, there’s always the Nightcrawler pizza parlour.
Ex-Directory, 8 Vernon St, Liverpool L2 2AY
The only way to get into this bar is through a phone box. Honestly! Head here for some underground cocktails with an air of secrecy and mystery. This speakeasy style bar serves Instagram-worthy cocktails like the Catwalk Bellini – a drink served in a stiletto. A visit here is guaranteed to set you up for a great night out on the town together!
As playwright George Bernard Shaw once said, “there is no sincerer love than the love of food.” He wasn’t wrong! The way to many of our hearts are through our stomachs – and what better way to spend your romantic break in Liverpool than filling up with some of the best grub the city has to offer?
Maray, 91 Bold St, Liverpool L1 4HF
A little slice of Paris’ 4th ‘arrondissement’, Maray serves some of the most breathtaking small plates in Liverpool. We suggest ordering the Cauliflower – a beautiful combination of succulent roasted cauli, flaked almonds, pomegranate, tahini, yoghurt & harissa. The whipped goat’s cheese with honey, thyme and crostini is also pretty magical. This Jay Rayner endorsed culinary haunt has also just launched a basement bar, perfect for those pre-dinner aperitifs. Great option for either lunch or dinner.
Etsu, 25 The Strand, Liverpool L2 0XJ
Tucked away in an unexpected corner of the city, this authentic Japanese restaurant is a feast for the senses. The eatery is beautifully simple, and lets the food do all the talking. Their extensive menu will appeal to anyone, catering to even the most reserved of palates. If you’re not feeling too adventurous, try the Yasai Gyoza. The real star of the show, however, is the abundance of fresh sushi. Share a platter of Sushi and Sashimi, paired with fragrant Japanese plum wine. We recommend saving this for an evening meal.
Carpathia, 7th Floor, 30 James Street, Liverpool L2 0NJ
Taking its name from the ship that rescued the 705 Titanic survivors, Carpathia Champagne Bar & Restaurant offers seasonal dishes that are perfectly simple yet delightful – all served at a stunning location with a roof terrace to boot. All style and all substance; here you can enjoy dishes created by some of the most talented chefs in Liverpool. Their Goosnargh Duck Breast and Herb Crusted Lamb Rump dishes steal the show. Perfect option for an extra special lunch or spectacular evening meal.
Make your romantic break even more memorable by adding some experiential elements into your itinerary. Stuck for ideas? Indulge in a Twilight Spa Evening at Morgan’s Spa, or shake things up with Samba Dancing Lessons at Alma de Cuba!
