Harry Potter: A History of Magic

Still waiting to receive your official Hogwarts letter? Aren’t we all.

This month, the Liverpool Central Library are hosting an amazing Harry Potter-inspired exhibition, perfect for us muggles.

If you’ve always wanted to delve into the weird world of wizardry, learn how to concoct some potent potions and discover some magical creatures,  this unique exhibition is the one for you.

Capturing the traditions of folklore and magic at the heart of the Harry Potter series, it will feature specially designed panels influenced by the Potter exhibition, showing images of rare books, manuscripts and magical objects featured in the British Library’s exhibition.

River of Light

When: Sunday 5th November

Where: The Waterfront

Remember, remember the 5th of November! This year Bonfire night falls on a Sunday and the council have officially announced that the River of Light will be returning to Liverpool’s waterfront for the second year running.

Organised by the UK’s most successful firework companies, Titanium fireworks, they will be hoping to draw thousands of people from the city and the Wirral, as they light up the skies over the Mersey.

The bright, pretty lights will be accompanied by a soundtrack and fiery street animation from around 5pm along the Pierhead and The Strand.

The display has been tipped to be bigger and more spectacular than last year.

The National Theatre’s acclaimed play Warhorse is coming to Liverpool this November, following 8 record-breaking years in London’s West End.

At the outbreak of World War One, Joey, young Albert’s beloved horse, is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France. He’s soon caught up in enemy fire, and fate takes him on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides before finding himself alone in no man’s land.

Based on the hugely popular novel by Michael Morpurgo, this powerfully moving and imaginative drama is packed full of stirring music and centres around the astonishing life-sized horses by South Africa’s Handspring Puppet Company, who bring breathing, galloping, charging horses to thrilling life on stage.

Swing Sunday Lunch

Christmas Light Switch On

This year, Liverpool city centre officially turns into a twinkly Christmas wonderland from 4pm on Thursday 9th November.

The festive evening will feature amazing street performances, storytelling, dancing, singing, special effects and of course the all important 30 metre tree will be switched on.

During the show there will be exclusive appearances from Christmas panto stars and even Santa Claus himself is expected to stop by to wish everyone a Merry Christmas.

Shops, bars and restaurants will be open late so you can carry on the party, or get some Christmas shopping done, well into the night.

Soul and Motown Weekend

Back for another year of fun and frivolity, Liverpool’s Christmas markets will feature over 40 traditional festive style cabins, all decorated with yuletide garlands and frosty, magical lighting.

This year they will return to St George’s Plateau, outside St George’s Hall and will feature an abundance of craft stalls, selling handmade jewellery, festive decorations, trinkets and unique gifts.

Always buzzing with a warm and merry atmosphere, the markets will offer lucky shoppers a range of delicious German themed hot and cold drinks, tasty snacks and of course bratwurst and gourmet burgers.

Ice Festival

When: Friday 17th November

Returning to the Pierhead, this year’s festival is promised to be bigger and better than ever before.

After the huge success of last year, the spectacular Ice Festival will feature a super-sized triple ice slide, a larger ice rink, a giant ferris wheel and 50 traditional German market stalls.

There will also be an amazing Ice Bar, featuring a sub-zero room of crystal clear ice sculptures where even the bar, tables and chairs are carved from real ice.

It’s one of the best events in November in the run up to Christmas in Liverpool.

The Little Mermaid

When: Saturday 25th November – Saturday 20th January

Where: The Everyman

The Everyman’s rock ‘n’ roll panto is one of the best Christmas treats, bringing the best of pantomime and theatre together.

Among the cast will be notorious dame Francis Tucker and master of mischief Adam Keast, who will once again bring the audience to their feet to dance and cheer or avoid a soaking.

Featuring a live band, plenty of laughs and more than a few surprises, The Little Mermaid is the perfect festive event.

Victorian Christmas at Speke Hall

When: Saturday 25th November – Sunday 10th December

Finally in our list of the best events in November is the amazing Victorian Christmas at Speke Hall.

A glorious winter wonderland that will transport you back to the Victorian times, delve into the past with lots of fun family activities including Christmas trails and sugar mice making, listen to carols and say hello to Father Christmas.
