Who was Dusty Springfield, the soul of British Music?

From I Only Want to Be With You to the legendary Son of a Preacher Man, Dusty Springfield’s top hits have become part of British music folklore, inspiring television shows, musicals and generations of female artists including the iconic Amy Winehouse.

Regularly compared to the great soul divas of the last century, such as Aretha Franklin, Dionne Warwick and Mary Wells, Dusty was one of Britain’s most successful female performers.

Mary O’Brien was just 21 years old when she joined her brother and a friend in a folk and country group called The Springfields. After limited success, the singer embarked on a solo career under the name Dusty Springfield in 1963, becoming an instant hit with her debut single I Only Want to Be With You.

From there, Dusty’s fame skyrocketed as hit after hit rose up the charts, including I Just Don’t Know What To Do With Myself, You Don’t Have To Say You Love Me and I Close My Eyes.

A move to LA in 1972, however, saw Dusty’s popularity crumble and the soul singer never reached the same levels of acclaim as her sixties high. Two US-recorded albums bombed out the charts. A small 1980s revival followed, but the onset of cancer shortly after finally silenced one of Britain’s most famous soul singers. Dusty died in 1999, at the age of only 59.
